How to Get an Oxytocin Prescription (Legally) in the US

To get oxytocin legally in the US, you need an evaluation by a licensed prescriber (a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant), either in person or through a licensed telehealth service. If they decide it’s appropriate, they send a prescription to a licensed compounding pharmacy, which prepares the spray for you.

Key takeaways

  • Licensed physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants can prescribe it.
  • It’s prescribed off-label, so many providers will want to discuss your goals and history.
  • Online, the process is usually a health questionnaire reviewed by a clinician.
  • A legitimate service will sometimes say no.

Step 1: Find a licensed prescriber

Oxytocin isn’t a controlled substance, so licensed prescribers can prescribe it within their scope of practice. That includes physicians (MD or DO), nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The prescriber must be licensed in the state where you are. Some primary care providers are unfamiliar with off-label oxytocin, which is why many people use telehealth services that specialize in it.

Step 2: Complete an evaluation

Expect questions about your health history, current medications, pregnancy status, and what you hope oxytocin will help with. Depending on your state and the service, this may be an online questionnaire reviewed by a clinician, a message exchange, or a video visit.

Step 3: The provider decides

A responsible provider will explain that compounded oxytocin isn’t FDA-approved for these uses, discuss the mixed evidence, and decide whether it’s appropriate. If something in your history makes it a poor fit, they should say no.

Step 4: A compounding pharmacy prepares it

The prescription goes to a state-licensed 503A compounding pharmacy, which prepares the spray for you specifically and ships it, usually in cold packaging. Your label lists the strength, directions and beyond-use date.

What does it cost?

Compounded oxytocin usually isn’t covered by insurance. Telehealth programs commonly bundle the visit, medication and shipping into a monthly membership, often in the range of about $115 to $200 per month. Ask what’s included and whether you pay if you aren’t prescribed.

Questions to ask any provider

  • Which pharmacy prepares the medication, and is it licensed to ship to my state?
  • Who reviews my answers, and how do I contact them later?
  • What happens if it doesn’t help or I have side effects?
  • Can I pause or cancel easily?
